What regions are covered by Traffic Vizzion?

See our list of available regions.

How many cameras are there in each region?

This varies from region to region, and can be anywhere from 5 cameras to more than 200 cameras .

How up-to-date are the camera images?

This varies from region to region, the camera images can refresh anywhere from once per second to once every 15 minutes.

Does Traffic Vizzion display static or moving images?

Currently Traffic Vizzion displays static images.

What do I need to run Traffic Vizzion?

You need a compatible device, an internet connection through your mobile operator, and a Traffic Vizzion subscription.  To use location based features you will need a built-in or Bluetooth GPS.  For safety reasons, we also strongly recommend a car mount for your cell phone.

What devices are supported?

See our list of  compatible devices.

Which cell phone networks are supported?

Any network that provides internet data access is supported.

What GPS devices are supported?

Traffic Vizzion should work with any built-in or Bluetooth GPS, from companies such as Microsoft/Pharos, Holux, GlobalSat etc.

Does Traffic Vizzion work without a GPS?

Yes, the location based features (“Find Nearby” and “Watch Road Ahead”) will not be available without a GPS, but you can still manually browse and view cameras by region.

Can Traffic Vizzion be used for navigation?

Traffic Vizzion provides overview maps of available regions, and if you have a  built-in or Bluetooth GPS Traffic Vizzion can display your current location on the map.  It does not provide turn by turn directions or the highly detailed maps of most navigation systems.

Can  I use Traffic Vizzion and my GPS navigation software at the same time?

Since a GPS device can generally only be used by one application at a time, it is necessary for one application to relinquish control of the GPS before another application can use it.  Traffic Vizzion automatically relinquishes control of the GPS as soon as you switch to another application.  However, when switching to Traffic Vizzion from another application such as Microsoft Pocket Streets or Mapopolis Navigator , it is necessary to choose the “Stop GPS” (or similar) option before Traffic Vizzion will be able to use the GPS.

Another option is to buy special driver software such as Eltima’s “Serial Splitter Mobile Edition” that splits the real GPS channel into two “virtual” GPS channels that each application can use concurrently.

Do you have to pay fees to receive GPS signals?

No, GPS is free once you have purchased the GPS receiver.

How much of my data plan will Traffic Vizzion use up when I download a traffic camera image / download a map?

Each downloaded traffic camera image will use approximately 10KB.  Unlike most other systems, Traffic Vizzion optimizes the data you need for your display, keeping data usage to an absolute minimum.   Remember though, when using the “Watch Road Ahead” feature, many images may be downloaded during your journey (typically 10-50 images per hour, or around 100KB-500KB per hour), so you may want to consider an “unlimited” data plan from your mobile operator if using this feature.

A map download can use up to 256KB when first retrieved, but once they are downloaded, maps are stored on your local device and do not need to be downloaded again.

How long does it take to download an image / download a map?

For camera images, this depends on the speed of your mobile internet access and the speed of the particular camera feed, but typically it takes just a few  seconds to retrieve an image. Unlike most other systems, Traffic Vizzion optimizes the data you need for your display, minimizing download time.

A map download can take several minutes, but once downloaded maps are stored on your local device and do not need to be downloaded again (unless you request a map update).

How reliable is Traffic Vizzion?

Our server up time is about 99.7%.   Individual cameras may be unavailable at any given time for a variety of reasons, including construction, weather conditions or mechanical or electrical failure.  Check our service status page for up to date information.   Traffic Vizzion detects cameras that are temporarily out of service, and will not attempt to download images from those cameras, saving you time, frustration and money.

Will Traffic Vizzion harm my device in any way?

No, Traffic Vizzion does not make any potentially harmful system changes to your device.

Does Traffic Vizzion own the cameras?

No, the cameras are owned by local government and municipal authorities.  Vizzion has obtained permission and/or a license to use the camera images from each local authority.  Copyright of the images is retained by the respective authorities.

How do I know which direction a camera is facing?

If the direction the camera is facing is known, it will be shown as part of the camera name, e.g. “(N) “  for a north-facing camera, “SB” for southbound traffic etc.

How do I keep the backlight on?

When using the “Find Nearby” or “Watch Road Ahead” features, Traffic Vizzion automatically keeps the backlight on all the time.  If not using these features, the backlight will turn off according to the “Backlight timeout” setting found under Start/Settings/Power Management on your device.

Why does it take so long to get a GPS position when I start Traffic Vizzion?

Most GPS devices will take longer to get an initial position if the vehicle is already moving, so consider waiting for the GPS to get a position before moving off.  Also if the GPS does not have a clear view of the sky (e.g. if  the GPS is not placed on the dashboard or if you are in a built up area) it can take longer to get a position.  You may also find that the GPS takes longer to get a position if it has been switched off for a few hours.

Note that when using “Watch Road Ahead”, Traffic Vizzion also needs a bearing (direction of travel) in order to select a camera.  So once a GPS position has been obtained, Traffic Vizzion then waits for you to start moving before measuring your bearing and selecting a camera.

How do I stop Traffic Vizzion from showing cameras that are too close / too far away?

Select Options and change the settings for the closest, furthest and ideal camera distances to suit your preferences.

How do I change the displayed distances from “miles / yards” to “kilometers / meters”?

Select Options and change the “Show Distances in” option.
